Shortly after I published my recent piece on IUD insertions and pain control, my friend Shawna texted me. Shawna is a certified nurse midwife with a master’s in public health who is currently doing a certificate program in narrative medicine (from Columbia, nbd) centering on IUD insertion experiences (!!). She is also the author of the rad newsletter, Blood Harmony, which I highly recommend if you need music inspo.
She seemed like a pretty damn good authority on the matter to me. So I texted her back, asked her to come hang out with me on the internet, and now we all get to reap the benefits of her knowledge!
In this pod, we discuss:
the research and real-world practice of misoprostol for IUD insertions
when in your cycle to get an IUD insertion
the options providers have (and don’t have) around pain management for IUD insertions
best practice for those with and without a history of pelvic pain and/or trauma
and more, because Shawna is amazing and hilarious!
Shawna is a freaking gift in my life and I know she’ll be one in yours, too! Enjoy hanging with us!
